Our cluster decided to volunteer our time at an even called “Fifth Quarter” at Newark High School on October 19th. The event took place after Newark High School 's homecoming football game. The Fifth Quarter event was inside the school after the football game and there were so many events that the students could enjoy including; a 3v3 basketball tournament, an improve comedy show, food, music and dancing, inflatable jousting toys, ping pong etc. and our LIFE cluster helped to facilitate all of these things. The purpose of the event was to offer a safe and fun option for students after homecoming and encourage them not to go out, drink and make bad decisions. The event was sponsored by the Delaware Counsel on Gambling Problems. The DCGP had booths set up with educational information about their program and encouraged students to make responsible decisions and provided them with information about gambling. Our LIFE cluster, being communication students, decided that we wanted to create some kind of message supporting the DCGP. We decided to create two different types of Public Service Announcements spreading awareness about the DCGP. Some of the students created a brochure, which they printed and made copies of as well as transposed onto a large scale tri-fold presentation board. The rest of the students wrote a script, filmed and edited a PSA commercial in support of the DCGP. In addition to the short power point we created describing the NHS Fifth Quarter event we will also be showing our commercial and passing our brochures.
