One of the goals of the LIFE program is to foster in its participants an increased awareness of the student's role in an increasingly international community. It was with this objective in mind that our cluster chose to use our community service project as an opportunity to assist some of the American troops currently serving in foreign locations around the globe. Using an organization known as Operation Shoebox as our groundwork, our cluster began collecting some of the ordinary domestic goods that troops deployed overseas sometimes have difficulty acquiring for themselves. We collected products such as games, snacks, and toiletries with the intention of sending these items to individual soldiers affiliated with the University of Delaware . In doing so, our students strengthened their ties to a local community while simultaneously gaining a better understanding of what we can do in a global community. And we also hopefully brightened the days of a few soldiers.
