In February 2003 a genocide began in the Darfur region of Sudan . Since that time over 400,000 have been killed and 2.5 million have been displaced. Another major problem in the region is that rape is being used as a form of war and females, of all ages, are victims. Our cluster has teamed up with STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition to participate in DarfurFast. We have asked people to give up one luxury item on December 5 and instead donate the money they would have spent on that item to Genocide Intervention Networks Civilian Protection Program. In Darfur , women and girls are forced to wander in search of firewood for cooking, exposing them to rape and attack from militias the Civilian Protection Program works with Darfuri community leaders, displaced women and girls, and the African Union Mission in Sudan to protect women and girls in internally displaced persons camps.
