This semester our cluster has gone above and beyond the usual canned food drive. Instead, we have decided to hold a Guitar Hero tournament for the entire University of Delaware . The proceeds from our event will be donated to AfriCare, one of the most notable charities supporting HIV/AIDS education in African countries. Our cluster goal for this project is to raise over $500.00 to donate – this will be able to fund an entire year of HIV/AIDS education for a small village. Through this experience my students have learned many valuable lessons such as how to work in a team, how to organize a major campus-wide event, and the importance of HIV/AIDS education in African nations. They enjoyed painting banners to advertise the event in kiosks in Trabant, collecting donations and registering participants for the tournament, writing the rules for the tournament, and making posters to display facts about our charity as well as the problems facing the African continent today. Our presentation consists of showing a quick 2-minute movie made by the students as well as a quick presentation of AfriCare statistics. The movie highlights the gap between how American college students perceive Africa , and the real struggles these nations face. Our project aims to not only donate to Africa monetarily, but to also educate the campus and LIFE program about the issues that Africa is facing today. Most of all, we hope to make a difference.
