Did you know that a recent study found children ages 0-6 spend an average of 2 hours a day watching television or playing video games? While it may not seem like much, this is 3 times the amount they spend reading or being read to! To combat these statistics, our LIFE cluster collected some of our favorite children's books to donate to Mom's House, a center “providing safe, secure, and totally free childcare to low-income single parents wishing to continue their education.” We brought boxes of books, along with baby food and art supplies to the children and volunteers at Mom's House, and even got to spend some time playing and reading with the children. The books will be kept at Mom's House, providing the kids with mentally stimulating and imaginative entertainment at their fingertips. These readily available books will also give the volunteers there a chance to take a break and read to the children whenever their day gets too hectic. In working with Mom's House, we have gained an immense amount of respect for its volunteers and the families they help, and we hope to give these children some of the same benefits we had growing up. We will present you with a power point slideshow which includes the history of Mom's House, facts about the impact of reading to children, and lots of fun pictures detailing our time spent working to help these wonderful children.
