Our cluster decided to clean up two beaches in Lewes , Delaware for our community service project. Our class wanted to give back to the community and also help the environment at the same time so a beach cleanup seemed to fit perfectly. Our cluster was joined by an Associate Arts cluster, lead by Erin Toole and our LIFE mentor, Dr. Targett. Together both clusters traveled to Lewes Beach to clean any trash that we could find. Although it was the off season, our clusters still found a good amount of trash on the Lewes beach. Armed with only plastic bags, students picked up any piece of trash in sight. Students created posters promoting recycling and keeping the beach clean. Those posters were laminated and staple-gunned to fences on the beach. After Lewes Beach was clean, we moved on to Cape Henlopen State Park . Cape Henlopen State Park is a carry on, carry off beach so there was very little trash. However, both clusters cleaned up after people who did not abide by the parks rules. Dr. Targett educated our clusters about such things as why the ocean water seems blue and how garbage can wash up on any beach. When the trip was over several students prepared a letter to local government officials highlighting some of the problems we saw at the beaches and provided them with some suggestions to make the beaches better. Our PowerPoint presentation will highlight our work that we did during the cleanup and the steps leading up to it using pictures and text.
